Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who is widely considered to be one of the founding figures of Western philosophy. He was born in Athens in 470 BCE and spent much of his life engaging in philosophical discussions with the citizens of the city. Socrates is best known for his method of questioning, known as the Socratic method, which involved asking probing questions to stimulate critical thinking and self-examination. He believed in the importance of seeking truth and wisdom through rational inquiry and self-reflection. Socrates' teachings and ideas were controversial in his time, and he was eventually sentenced to death by the Athenian government for corrupting the youth and impiety. Despite his lack of written works, his student Plato documented many of his teachings, ensuring his lasting influence on philosophy.
