SEIS, or the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, is a key instrument aboard the InSight lander, designed to study the deep interior of Mars. It consists of a set of high-performance seismometers that will record the seismic waves generated by marsquakes, meteorite impacts, and other sources. By analyzing the propagation of these waves through the Martian interior, scientists hope to gain insight into the planet's crust, mantle, and core. This information will provide valuable data about the composition, structure, and tectonic activity of Mars, helping to answer fundamental questions about the planet's formation and evolution. SEIS represents a critical tool for understanding the geophysical processes at work on Mars and expanding our knowledge of planetary interiors beyond Earth.
